Dan Kusaya & The Chimurenga Inspiration celebrates the vibrant spirit of Zimbabwean culture, weaving the rich, resonant tones of the mbira and marimba into powerful, contemporary arrangements. Based in Champaign, Illinois, the group fuses the rhythms of reggae, afrobeat, jazz, funk, and dance with the heartbeat of Zimbabwean Chimurenga—a tradition rooted in resilience and unity.
The project began when Zimbabwean musician, educator, and performer Dan Kusaya electrified a Friday Night Live audience in Champaign, capturing the attention of Jason Finkelman of the University of Illinois’ Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Their collaboration soon expanded with Gordon Kay, who studied Zimbabwean drumming in Harare, bringing authentic rhythmic textures to the ensemble. The group grew to include Clifford Jakopo, JB Faires, Dave Hardy, and Ben Hay, each adding unique musical and cultural depth to the sound.
Formed officially after a standout performance at Krannert Uncorked, the band quickly gained recognition for its dynamic performances and cross-cultural energy. They’ve lit up stages at the Lotus World Music Festival, Riggs Beer Company, Friday Night Live, Fork & Roots, and the University of Illinois African Studies Program, earning a reputation as musical bridge-builders connecting traditions and audiences across continents.
As The Chimurenga Inspiration continues to evolve, the band is recording its debut album and preparing for an exciting season of live shows. Connect with them to book a performance, join their mailing list, or experience the only band bringing this unmistakable sound to the Midwest—and beyond.
